AI layoffs tracker: every job cut employers blamed on AI
As of 2 Oct 2026, AIimpacted has verified 81,486 job losses across 42 events at 42 companies where the employer itself said AI was doing the work. This is a floor, not an estimate: it counts only what employers stated publicly, so quiet replacements and cuts merely announced alongside AI spending are not in it.
In one line
- The 5 biggest events, Oracle, Citigroup, HP, Block, Lufthansa, account for 66% of the 81,486 jobs in the tracker.
- 14 of 42 events rest on an SEC filing or the employer's own statement; the rest on a report quoting the employer.
- Events dated 2026 total 60,946 jobs across 31 events, against 20,540 jobs across 11 events dated 2025.
- Where a share of the workforce is known, the median AI-attributed cut is 11% of staff (32 events).
- May 2026 is the biggest month on record: 26,709 jobs across 13 events. The longest quiet stretch ran 3 months, Jun 2025 to Aug 2025.
- 42 employers in 13 countries have said on the record that AI is doing work people used to do.
AI layoffs by month
Months are dated by the employer's announcement, not by when the row entered the ledger. May 2026 is the biggest month on record with 26,709 jobs across 13 events, led by Oracle.

How this tracker counts
- Employer attribution only. A job loss is counted when the employer itself said AI or automation now does the work - in a regulatory filing, an internal memo or an on-record statement.
- Spending decisions are excluded. "Reallocating resources toward AI" or "funding our AI investment" is a budget choice, not AI doing the work, and produces no entry.
- A floor, not an estimate. Quiet replacements never announced are absent by design, so this total is lower than modelled figures and far lower than trackers built from news coverage.
- Upcoming cuts are not counted. Announced-but-not-yet cuts live on the upcoming board until they happen.
- Every row is checkable. Each links to the employer's filing or statement where one is public, otherwise to the report quoting the employer, and to our report on it. More on the standard on the about page.
- Shares and quotes are decoration. A share of workforce is derived from two stated figures or is the employer's own stated share; a quote is the employer's verbatim words from the primary document. Neither changes the total.
Why this total is lower than other AI layoff trackers
Most trackers count a layoff as AI-driven when the coverage mentions AI. This one counts it only when the employer said AI is doing the work. That rule keeps out several kinds of cut that often get counted elsewhere:
- Cuts to pay for AI spending. Microsoft's 9,000 job cuts came as its AI infrastructure bill climbed, and the company said the people leaving were not being replaced by AI. Moving budget toward AI is a spending decision, not AI doing the work.
- Restructuring "around" AI. monday.com cut 620 jobs to reinvest in an AI platform, and management said the move was not about replacing workers with AI.
- AI attribution from analysts, not the employer. When TCS cut about 12,000 roles, the AI explanation came from analysts; the company pointed to slower growth.
- AI taking the customers, not the work. Reach cut 220 editorial jobs after AI search answers drew readers away. The jobs went because of AI, but no AI writes those articles.
- Cuts that have not happened yet. Announced plans wait on the upcoming board until they take effect.
Each of those is reported on this site as an article. None of them adds to the total above, which is why it usually reads lower than a figure built from headlines. That is deliberate: every job in it is one an employer attributed to AI itself.
Questions
How many jobs have been lost to AI?
As of 2 Oct 2026, AIimpacted has verified 81,486 job losses across 42 events at 42 companies where the employer itself said AI was doing the work. This is a floor, not an estimate: it counts only what employers stated publicly, so quiet replacements and cuts merely announced alongside AI spending are not in it.
How many AI layoffs have there been in 2026?
60,946 verified job losses across 31 events dated 2026, by the same rule: the employer attributed the cuts to AI.
Which company has cut the most jobs because of AI?
Oracle, with 21,000 jobs in a single event dated 31 May 2026. Next are Citigroup (20,000) and HP (5,000).
What share of a workforce do AI layoffs take?
Across the 32 events where the employer stated a workforce figure or a share, the median AI-attributed cut is 11% of staff, ranging from 0.1% to 39%.
What counts as an AI layoff here?
Only job losses the EMPLOYER itself attributed to AI or automation doing the work - in a regulatory filing, an internal memo or an on-record statement. "Reallocating resources toward AI" or cuts announced while AI is discussed separately are spending decisions and are excluded. Every row links to the filing, memo or report quoting the employer.
