Where do AI job losses hide? Axis Bank opened 400 branches and its headcount still fell 3%
Axis Bank expects its investment in AI and technology to let it expand without adding many staff, its chief executive told Bloomberg Television. 'Our hope is that, at least to start with, there is no need to continue to increase the headcount at the same pace as before,' Amitabh Chaudhry said. The bank has already begun to see productivity gains from the push: India's third-largest private lender opened roughly 400 branches in fiscal 2026 while its net headcount fell 3% year on year, ending March with more than 101,000 employees. No layoffs were announced and none are expected. That is precisely what makes it worth recording. This is the version of AI job loss that never appears in a layoff tracker: not people removed from payroll, but the hiring that 400 new branches would ordinarily have required, quietly not happening. Executives at JPMorgan, Citigroup and Standard Chartered have made similar noises about AI reshaping bank workforces.
