Axis Bank ended FY26 with 101,337 employees, down from 104,453 a year earlier, a net fall of 3,116, even though it hired 31,665 people during the year. For FY27 it plans 12,000 to 12,500 campus recruits, up from about 11,500, of whom only 150 to 200 will be technology hires. Group HR head Rajkamal Vempati says transaction-processing and lower-level operational work is becoming less relevant as technology takes over repetitive tasks, and the bank now reviews vacancies before deciding whether a role needs replacing. It estimates 15 to 20 per cent of current tasks could disappear as automation expands. The bank does not link automation to job cuts, and says it is redeploying staff instead, placing about 65 per cent of internal applicants. That is why this is not counted as an AI layoff. It is still the quiet version: when work disappears through unfilled vacancies, headcount falls without anyone announcing a cut.
