Uber cuts 3,300 people while writing a $10 billion check for robotaxis
Uber is cutting about 3,300 salaried jobs, a tenth of its workforce, chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi told employees on 2 September 2026. Drivers, who are independent contractors, are not part of the count. It is the company's largest cut since 2020. "It's important to say that these changes are about how we're organized and what we're prioritizing, not about anyone's contributions to Uber," he wrote in a letter quoted by Fortune. He said the cuts were not a response to a downturn but to a company that had grown too layered: Uber reduced by 20% the number of employees seven or more levels below the chief executive, halved the number of "micro-teams" with only one or two direct reports, and merged its separate delivery operations teams. "The outcome is a simpler org chart geared toward building versus managing." The savings are to be reinvested in growth, including self-driving vehicles, where Uber expects to commit $10 billion to robotaxi partnerships. ABC7 notes it is not yet clear how many of the jobs are in the Bay Area. The letter, as reported, frames the cuts as a matter of structure, with the money moving toward autonomy.
