Oracle raises restructuring cost estimate to $2.8 billion, citing AI deployment and data center spending
Oracle disclosed in a regulatory filing that it is expanding its 2026 Restructuring Plan by roughly $700 million, lifting the total estimated cost to about $2.8 billion from a prior estimate of $2.1 billion. The plan covers severance, contract termination fees and related exit costs, and the company said a portion of the reduction is linked to how Oracle is deploying AI across parts of its business. The added costs reflect "additional actions that we expect to take." As of August 31, Oracle put the total estimated cost of the plan at up to $2.1 billion, with $165 million of restructuring expense booked in the quarter. By the end of May, its global headcount had fallen by roughly 21,000 year over year to around 141,000, a drop of about 13%, which Oracle partly attributed to AI adoption. Meanwhile capital spending hit $28.5 billion in the quarter, up from $8.5 billion a year earlier. The pattern is now familiar in enterprise software: money moves from payroll to data centers, and AI is the stated reason for both.
Oracle raising $40B while cutting jobs to fund the AI buildout is one hell of a bet. If AI demand keeps growing they look like geniuses. if it doesn't... good luck. ๐
