Thomson Reuters told engineering staff on 13 July 2026 that it is cutting up to 500 roles, about 1.8 percent of its 27,100 global workforce and 5.2 percent of its 9,400-strong operations and technology unit, Reuters reported the same day. The company's own explanation avoids the word AI: "As customer expectations across legal, tax, and regulatory workflows evolve, we are focusing our capacity where it matters most to customers," a spokesperson said. The hiring plan is where AI enters, in the company's words: it expects "to hire more than 250 net-new engineering roles globally over the next two years, the large majority senior and AI-native". So the employer describes a swap, roughly two engineers out for one AI-native senior engineer in, without ever saying the outgoing work is being automated. That is why this is recorded as an article and not as an AI job loss in the tracker. It sits alongside the company's own AI products in legal, tax and news, which it credited for 10 percent revenue growth in the quarter to March. Reuters is Thomson Reuters' own news division and reported on the cut at its parent.
