India's Chief Economic Adviser, V Anantha Nageswaran, said on Sunday that a quarter of the workforce now holds jobs exposed to artificial intelligence, up from about a fifth in 2012. He spoke at the launch of a white paper by the Great Lakes Centre for Finance & Economic Research in Chennai, written by Vidya Mahambare, Vivek Jadhav and Vishnu Venugopalan, and cited its finding that nearly half of urban jobs are exposed. Nageswaran stressed that exposure is not job loss, and said 46 million workers, including doctors, teachers and engineers, are in roles where AI complements their work. The report also finds that 39.4% of workers under 25 hold highly routine jobs, the highest share of any age group. Nageswaran warned that junior staff are most at risk, since training newcomers is becoming a cost for firms, and urged retraining before disruption shows up in employment statistics. It is worth reading as a senior official's framing of exposure data, not a tally of layoffs.
