HubSpot layoffs: the SEC filing behind 660 job cuts says the company is rebuilt around AI, and that AI is not why people are going
HubSpot told staff on 6 October 2026 that it is reducing its team by about 7 percent, saying goodbye to nearly 660 employees. In the CEO memo filed with the SEC as Exhibit 99.1 to an 8-K, the company says that over the past year it shifted its strategy from building software that helps customers grow to delivering outcomes for them with AI, and that this shift is transforming product, pricing and how it serves customers. It says it must therefore change how it is organised: product teams built around customer outcomes rather than hubs, fewer management layers, and smaller teams with clear ownership. The memo is explicit that the decision is not driven by AI-related efficiencies and is not simply cost-cutting, adding that HubSpot has grown headcount slower than revenue. Severance is 20 weeks of base pay plus one week per year of service, up to 30 weeks, with five months of health cover and six months of outplacement. The case is a useful example of an employer that credits AI for a strategic reorganisation while denying that AI is doing the work of the people let go.
