Worldwide Software Development GitLab
GitLab chief executive Bill Staples announced a restructuring on 11 May 2026 in an open letter to team members, customers and investors published on the company's own blog. Four operational changes, he wrote, "are part of the workforce reduction": reducing the number of countries where GitLab has small teams, flattening the organisation by "removing up to three layers of management in some functions", re-organising R&D into roughly 60 smaller teams - and this one, which is the reason this entry exists: "We're rewiring internal processes with AI agents, automating the reviews, approvals, and handoffs to speed us up, and plan to right-size roles across the company to follow suit." That is an employer saying, in its own words and in the same breath as the cut, that AI agents now do internal work and that headcount will follow. The strategy behind it is stated just as plainly: "Software will be built by machines, directed by people... Agents will plan, code, review, deploy, and repair. Humans still own the judgment that matters most." The board approved the plan on 1 June 2026. GitLab's 8-K filed the next day puts the scale at "approximately 14% of its global workforce as of January 31, 2026", against the roughly 2,580 team members in 60 countries its annual report gives for that date - on the order of 360 people - plus an exit from 22 countries and $30m-$35m in restructuring charges. Two cautions belong with this. First, AI is one of four stated drivers, not the whole of the 14%, and GitLab has not said how the cut divides between them, so no job figure is attached here. Second, the 8-K itself gives no reason but "realigning its operating structure to optimize execution against its strategic priorities" - the AI attribution is in the CEO's letter, not the filing. Much of the coverage described this as cuts made to fund AI infrastructure spending. The letter does not say that.

lol exactly. “agentic-era” is basically the 2026 version of “AI Layoffs strategic realignment” 💀
