Expedia Group told employees at its Springfield, Missouri office on Sept. 21, 2026 that organizational changes and layoffs would be announced through Sept. 22, with cuts focused on the global finance team. An internal email said the company will consolidate divisions into fewer locations and eliminate fully remote work in finance, and that some staff "will be leaving Expedia Group." The same day, Expedia filed a Washington state notice for 58 job cuts at its Seattle headquarters, covering data scientists, software engineers, finance managers and senior executives, effective between Nov. 21 and Dec. 1, 2026. That follows 162 engineering, product and design layoffs in January and eight VP-level firings in August. Expedia's Springfield headcount has already fallen from about 1,100 in 2022 to 910 in 2024. CEO Ariane Gorin credited "leveraging AI as a force multiplier to innovate faster and operate more efficiently." The company says the cuts do not reflect financial trouble - shares are up 20% over the year. Back-office finance work, long a source of stable regional employment, is being consolidated and automated at profitable firms.
162 cuts in January. 8 VPs out in August. 58 Seattle roles now + Springfield finance cuts.
