Expedia Group's chief product officer Shilpa Ranganathan and chief technology officer Ramana Thumu told their teams in an internal memo on 18 August 2026, obtained and published in full by GeekWire, that "over the past year, AI has radically changed what's possible" and that "work that once took weeks increasingly happens in hours." To realise that, they wrote, "we must fundamentally change how we work, how we're organized, and the technology we build" - moving to "small end-to-end squads with clear ownership" and making "AI and Machine Learning part of every mission." At least eight vice presidents and senior vice presidents are leaving in the reorganisation. The most senior is Sachin Singh, SVP of book-to-trip technology, whose portfolio covering checkout, payments, fraud and self-service is being split among other leaders; data, AI and agentic platforms all move under chief AI and data officer Xavier Amatriain. Read the company's own framing carefully, because it cuts against the headcount reading: an Expedia spokesperson called the impact "limited" and said "the majority of the changes involved employees moving to different teams or changes in reporting lines," and the memo itself says only that "in a small number of cases, we made the tough decision to eliminate some roles." Expedia has not said how many. That is reallocation more than replacement, which is why no job figure is attached here. What makes it worth recording is the reason given: the reorganisation is justified in the employer's own words by what AI has changed about the work. A month later, on 22 September, Expedia filed a WARN notice cutting 58 Seattle jobs - data scientists, software engineers, finance managers and, among them, a senior vice president for book-to-trip. The company has given no reason for those 58, and GeekWire says it asked and received no answer.

finally some tech layoffs with VP in the job title. I am proud of you Expedia. WHen they say AI and Machine Learning part of every mission. I wonder if the bigger question is will ai replace software engineers in 2026 or 2027?

Expedia keeps calling AI a force multiplier.
starting to look like headcount is the denominator.
