DeepScribe layoff: a former operations VP says AI made his job redundant, then an AI career coach he built got him hired at Pearl
A former DeepScribe vice president says AI made the team he was building redundant and cost him his job, and that an AI agent he built then helped him land his next one. Mark Quinn was vice president of operations and responsible AI at DeepScribe, a startup that automates medical documentation for doctors, and was laid off in early 2024; he says he and the company "mutually agreed" it was time to part ways. Of the leap in AI models, he told Entrepreneur: "It took us about a month to realize that it essentially made the operation I was building out almost moot, almost completely redundant." Quinn then built a "career buddy" AI agent, seeded with books and resources he trusted and fed his own experience. He says it pushed him to look again at a senior director of AI operations role at Pearl, helped him reframe his background and draft an approach to the company, and he got the job. This is Quinn's own account in a new interview; DeepScribe is not quoted and gave no reason of its own, so nothing here enters the AI layoffs tracker.
