Did Apple shelve AI job losses at AppleCare? A plan to replace 5,000 support staff with AI agents is on hold
Apple had planned to lay off roughly 5,000 AppleCare support employees and hand their work to generative AI phone and web agents, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported on 29 September 2026, and has now put that plan on hold indefinitely. The AI assistant is already live on the 1-800-APL-CARE line, where it troubleshoots problems and passes callers to a person when it cannot. The pause comes in the first weeks of John Ternus as chief executive, alongside a broader push to run leaner that includes trimming middle-management layers in hardware engineering. Apple has not commented, and no AppleCare jobs have been cut, so this is not counted as an AI layoff. It matters because it is the largest AI replacement plan yet reported at a big consumer company, and because the technology to do it is already answering calls. A shelved plan is not a cancelled one.
