Anthropic says AI is shrinking its junior hiring: entry-level share of technical hires fell from 27% to 9%
Anthropic says AI is cutting how many junior engineers it hires, though the AI developer has not laid anyone off. In a report published on 16 October 2026, "How employment is changing at Anthropic", four researchers at The Anthropic Institute write that "the proportion of junior technical hires fell even faster, from 27% to 9%", while "the share of junior-level employees in technical departments at Anthropic slipped from 21% to 14% since early 2025." The report says that "around a third of ML and a fifth of SWE managers reported hiring less due to AI." Overall the company is growing fast: its headcount has tripled in a year and technical hiring has kept rising in absolute terms, while the technical share of staff fell from 61% to 56%. The company says it has prioritised internal redeployment. The authors are careful about cause: tool adoption "is not random", early adopters were already on a steep upward path, and the study rests on internal data for a few hundred engineers plus 17 interviews, at a company whose practices "cannot be replicated across the economy". It is a rare look, from the employer itself, at AI narrowing the entry rung rather than removing existing jobs. This is a hiring change, not a job cut, so nothing here enters the AI layoffs tracker.
