Amazon and tech firms rehire workers after AI-driven layoffs prove premature
Amazon, Meta, and other tech companies are actively recruiting back former employees they previously laid off, according to Business Insider reporting. Maria Colacurcio, CEO of pay-intelligence platform Syndio, laid off five employees expecting AI to replace them, then rehired one two months later after realizing the technology wasn't mature enough and existing staff couldn't absorb the new roles. Jonathan Vidales, one of the rehired workers, now works as a global account partner and says AI handles tedious tasks but human judgment remains essential. Employment data firm Revelio Labs found boomerang hires rose to 3.4% of new US hires by end of 2025 from 3.1% two years prior. The trend reveals a disconnect between companies' AI expectations when announcing layoffs and the actual capabilities of current technology.
