Were 1,600 Atlassian job cuts really an AI layoff? Its CEO answers no and yes in the same sentence

Atlassian announced on 11 March 2026 that it was cutting roughly 10% of its workforce, about 1,600 roles, in a note from co-founder and CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes that the company filed with the SEC as an exhibit to an 8-K. The stated purpose is funding rather than replacement: the restructure is "to self-fund further investment in AI and Enterprise Sales", alongside accelerating the path to sustained GAAP profitability and reorganising teams to move faster. On AI and jobs the note is more careful than most: "Our approach is not 'AI replaces people'. However, it would be disingenuous to pretend AI doesn't change the mix of skills we need or the number of roles required in certain areas." That one sentence is the honest middle of the AI job losses debate. Most announcements sit at an extreme - AI did it, or AI had nothing to do with it. Atlassian says both at once, and because it is paying for AI investment with 1,600 jobs rather than claiming software now does that work, the cuts are filed here as reallocation, not displacement.
