Deloitte's UK CFO Survey for the third quarter, published on 14 October 2026 with fieldwork from 17 September to 1 October, found that 52% of finance chiefs expect AI to reduce headcount in their own business over the next 12 months. That is a forecast. The Office for National Statistics measures something different: in its 8 October bulletin on business insights, 6% of UK businesses with ten or more employees that use AI said it had reduced their headcount, while fewer than 1% said it had increased it (fieldwork 21 September to 4 October). One figure is what finance leaders expect to happen, the other is what firms using AI report has happened, and the two are not the same population. Resultsense, which set the two side by side, reads the gap as a sign that job cuts are being planned ahead of the operational change that would produce them. Neither survey names an employer or counts jobs, so this is context for the layoff announcements that do, not an addition to the jobs total. Finance teams drawing up 2027 budgets are the people most likely to test whether the saving they expect has shown up.
