The Australian Bureau of Statistics' first survey of how AI is reshaping labour demand found that more than four in five businesses report no impact on job vacancies so far. About 4 per cent say AI has reduced their openings, roughly one in 200 say it has increased them, and many are unsure. Media and telecommunications firms were the most likely to report fewer vacancies, at 16 per cent. Businesses also expect vacancies to fall further, the bureau found. Sydney University's Skills Horizon report found in September "scant evidence" of a large-scale impact on job markets. Open positions stood at 325,000 in the three months to August, down almost a third from a 2022 peak. The employment department said it was unsure whether AI was solely to blame, though unemployment in more exposed industries has risen sharply since ChatGPT emerged. It is worth reading because it tests the loud claims about AI and jobs against official data.
