Kelly, Sanders and Casar propose competing bills to tax AI companies for worker relief
Sen. Mark Kelly introduced legislation requiring AI companies to fund a trust that would support workers threatened by the technology through job training, unemployment benefits and entrepreneurship programs. Sen. Bernie Sanders proposed a more aggressive approach - a one-time 50% tax on AI and robotics company stock creating an American Sovereign Wealth Fund with annual payouts to all Americans. Rep. Greg Casar's AI Tax and Work Protection Act would tax large AI companies to create a Work Protection Administration funding jobs in infrastructure, housing and care services. Congress is also debating separate bills on AI safety controls and children's protections, but lawmakers remain divided and no meaningful AI legislation has passed.
