Have AI layoffs really slowed - or did employers just stop calling job cuts AI?

US employers announced 52,881 job cuts in August 2026, the lowest August total since 2022, and AI fell to the fourth most-cited reason at 3,462 cuts - its weakest month since December 2025, ending a five-month run in which AI layoffs led every other category. Restructuring took the top spot instead, with 16,173. For the year to date AI still leads, named in 116,175 cuts, about 22% of the US total. The caveat matters more than the fall: Challenger records the reason an employer gives, so what dropped in August is what companies said, not necessarily the rate of AI job losses. There is reason to hold stated reasons loosely. A widely quoted survey says nearly six in ten companies present layoffs as AI-driven when the real reason is financial - though it polled 1,000 self-identified hiring managers through an opt-in mobile panel, was published by a resume-template business, carries no stated margin of error, and reaches 59% only by adding the 17% who said "exactly" to the 42% who said "somewhat". Its more telling number goes unquoted: 44% of those managers named AI as a layoff driver, while just 9% said AI had actually replaced a role.
