US employers announced 52,881 job cuts in August 2026, the slowest August for layoffs since 2022, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Artificial intelligence was given as the reason for 3,462 of them, the lowest monthly total since the end of last year, and restructuring was the most-cited cause at more than 16,000. Over the year the picture is different: AI has been cited in more than one in five announced job cuts and remains the leading stated reason for layoffs in 2026. Total cuts so far this year are down 41% on 2025, or 15% once government jobs are excluded. Consumer products companies, including Procter & Gamble and Estee Lauder, accounted for more than 10,000 of August's cuts, and food producers for nearly 8,000, a third of them at Tyson Foods. The technology sector announced 6,103, its lowest month of the year, though it is still the largest source of cuts in 2026. "This is the quietest August since 2022, but is generally on average for the month since the mid-2010s. What we'd like to see with low layoffs is an increase in hiring activity," said Andy Challenger, the firm's chief revenue officer.
