Is it an AI layoff if the CEO says it isn't? Patreon cut 20% and said AI changed how it works, not who it needs

Patreon laid off about 20% of its workforce, roughly 93 employees, The Verge reported on 23 July 2026, following 404 Media. Chief executive Jack Conte's memo to staff went out of its way to deny the obvious reading. The company is not making the changes "because we believe AI replaces humans," he wrote, but AI has "fundamentally transformed the tech industry, including how we work, how we build products, how we communicate, and more," and that shift has changed "how we operate and organize." A month earlier, on The Verge's Decoder podcast, Conte had said Patreon was "100 percent embracing" AI tools internally, warning that if it did not, "we, as a company, will be dead in three years." Patreon previously cut 17% of staff in 2022 and closed its Dublin and Berlin offices. The memo draws a line that is getting harder to see: AI is named as the reason the company reorganised, and the reorganisation is the reason people lost their jobs, yet the employer says AI did not replace them. Taken at its word, this is a cut made around AI rather than by it, which is why it is not counted in the AIimpacted tracker's total.
