Epic Games chief executive Tim Sweeney said on 12 October 2026 that the Fortnite maker is "moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration", and that "the aim isn't to do the same stuff with fewer people" but "to enable everyone here to build MORE and BETTER stuff". In posts on X reported by AFP, Sweeney said Epic's job, as a provider of tools and technology to much of the games industry, is "to survive the AI revolution" and to help other developers do the same, and that he is personally optimistic and sees the change as empowering for creators. The shift comes about six months after Epic said it would lay off more than 1,000 employees, a cut the company put down to slower growth rather than AI. Sweeney's own framing is a denial that AI is about headcount, which is why nothing here enters the AI layoffs tracker. It matters because Epic's Unreal Engine is used across the industry, so a studio-wide move to AI-first development at Epic sets the pace for the many studios that depend on its tools.
