Another AI layoff? Zscaler cuts 3% of staff, but its SEC filing says only 'reallocating resources'

Zscaler told the SEC on 3 September 2026 that it had committed two days earlier to a plan to 'reduce our worldwide headcount by approximately 3%', a cut of roughly 260 people against the more than 8,700 employees it reported at its 31 July year end. The 8-K puts the aggregate charge at $30.0 million to $33.0 million, primarily severance and benefits, with most of it recognised in the first half of fiscal 2027. The stated reason is that the company is 'strategically reallocating resources to provide additional capacity to support our AI and growth initiatives', with the recouped spend going to specialist sales teams chasing AI-driven security budgets. Nowhere does the filing say AI is doing work these employees used to do. That distinction is the whole question. A regulatory filing is the strongest place a company can make a claim, and Zscaler made a different one: a budget moving toward AI, not a workforce being replaced by it.
