Wells Fargo's finance chief says AI will take its headcount down further
In the employer's own words: said by the company's finance chief at an investor conference. This cut has not happened yet and is not counted in the verified job-loss totals.
Wells Fargo's chief financial officer told an investor conference on 15 September 2026 that artificial intelligence would bring the bank's headcount down more, pointing to AI already writing code autonomously and running across operations and call centres. He qualified it in the same answer: headcount will probably not fall every quarter forever, but there is a lot more still to drive. No figure was attached and no round was announced alongside it. The bank has previously said its shrinking headcount began before AI, and has shed roughly 65,000 roles since 2019, so this is a change in what the employer itself credits rather than a new set of cuts.
Maybe there won't even be one giant “AI layoff” at Wells Fargo. Imagine getting paid on Friday and spending every other Tuesday wondering if your login is gonna work 😁.
