The Telegraph is cutting up to 100 jobs as its new owner Axel Springer sets out to turn it into what the memo to staff calls "a global, AI-powered premium media and intelligence business", Press Gazette reported on 23 October 2026. The memo, from executive Hulshoff Pol and seen by Press Gazette, gives the reasons for the cuts in organisational terms: "we need to change how we are organised, how decisions are made, where we focus our resources and create efficiencies. We need clearer accountability, faster decision-making and a simpler, more effective organisation." Staff were also told the publisher would "reinvent the reader experience" using AI, data and technology, and build revenue from video, audio, puzzles, events, B2B, licensing and commerce. The memo does not say AI will do the work of the people leaving, so this is a restructuring toward an AI strategy rather than an AI job loss, and it is not counted in the tracker. Bloomberg reported that comment and analysis will merge with features and lifestyle, and Guido Fawkes reported cuts on the culture, fashion and sport desks. The cuts come less than four months after the takeover, and as the Telegraph's UK online audience fell 11% year on year in August, according to Ipsos iris.
