Kroger plans to cut about 3,000 corporate jobs over three years, roughly 37% of head office, and its chief executive's memo cites layers, overhead and technology, not AI. The memo from Greg Foran, who took over as chief executive in February, was shared with Grocery Dive on 12 October 2026 after Bloomberg News first reported the plan. Foran wrote that the grocer has "more layers, more handoffs and more overhead than we need" and that it will "take advantage of technology that can boost efficiency and reduce duplicative work". He said the changes "will create broader roles and faster decision making" and would let Kroger "move vital resources closer to the customer to lower prices, invest in our associates". Decisions on which roles go will be communicated "starting in the coming months", and the reductions run over three years. Reuters, which also saw the memo, put the cut at about 37% of roughly 8,200 corporate employees and noted that Kroger outlined an AI strategy in September and has named a chief data and AI officer. That is where the AI line in the headlines comes from: the wire services tie the job cuts to Kroger's AI push, but the memo itself talks about technology and overhead and never says AI will do the work of the roles being removed. So this is a dispatch, not an entry in our AI layoffs tracker, unless Kroger says more. Kroger cut about 1,000 corporate roles in June 2025; this round is roughly three times that and comes as the chain lowers its sales target and chases Walmart and Aldi on price. If Kroger's filings or executives later credit AI or automation for part of the headcount reduction, the entry moves to the ledger.

'Broader roles' sounds fine until it means the same work divided among fewer people. Fewer handoffs could help, but Kroger should be able to explain which tasks will actually disappear. The memo leaves that quite open.
